Christmas is the most important holiday of the year in Germany.

Christmas in Germany is called Weihnachten, and it is a three day holiday. Christmas celebrations start in Germany on 24th December (Christmas Eve) when Christmas gifts are exchanged. On 25th December (Christmas Day) and 26 December, usually the family gets together for celebrations.

A big part of the Christmas celebrations in Germany is Advent. Several different types of Advent calendars are used in German homes. They have with 24 decorated boxes or bags with small presents. December 6th is St. Nicholas' Day and "der Nikolaus" brings some small gifts, such as sweets and chocolate, to the children. He comes in the night between the 5th and the 6th and puts the presents into the shoes of the children, who usually place them by their doors on the previous evening.

During the festive season, many cities and towns hold Christmas markets which open usually from beginning of December until Christmas eve.

The Christmas tree in the living room is put up usually only on the morning of Christmas Eve. Germans also mainly use real, freshly cut fir or pine trees. Houses and gardens are decorated with festive lights

According to tradition, the 'Christkind' (Christ child or Baby Jesus) will place the wrapped gifts and parcels under the Christmas tree whilst young children usually are not allowed to enter the living room before the celebrations in the evening.

Families usually read the Christmas story together and sing Christmas carols on that evening and later enjoy a meal and eating traditional food.

'Christmas Stollen' is a traditional German Christmas cake with raisins. It is traditional to eat carp (a fish) or goose in Germany at Christmas. Dinner may be accompanied with apple and sausage stuffing, red cabbage, and potato dumplings. Lebkuchen is a traditional Christmas cookie, usually sweetened with honey. It’s similar to gingerbread and is a popular treat.
